The NBA’s Second Round Slump: Where’s the Drama?

The first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs set a bar so high it was almost impossible to clear. With three Game 7s and bracket-busting upsets, we were spoiled. Fast forward to today, and the second round feels like a bit of a cold shower.

Instead of buzzer-beaters and back-and-forth battles, we’re seeing a lot of one-sided dominance. Let’s look at the landscape of the final eight and where the momentum is swinging.

The Dominant Forces

Three out of the four series are leaning heavily in one direction, leaving several contenders gasping for air:

  • Knicks vs. 76ers (NYK leads 3-0): The Knicks are playing like a well-oiled machine. This isn’t just winning; it’s a statement. At this point, a sweep feels inevitable. Philadelphia looks gassed, and New York’s depth is proving to be too much to overcome.
  • Pistons vs. Cavaliers (DET leads 2-0): Detroit has all the momentum, but don’t count Cleveland out just yet. Heading back to the Land, the Cavs are likely to find their rhythm and steal at least one at home to avoid the total collapse.
  • Thunder vs. Lakers (OKC leads 2-0): The young core in OKC is playing with a level of poise that belies their age. While the Lakers are in a deep hole, their veteran presence usually accounts for a “pride win” at home. Expect them to claw one back before this series returns to Oklahoma.

The Lone Battle: Spurs vs. Timberwolves

This is the only series giving us the competitive fire we craved after the first round.

  • Spurs lead 2-1: San Antonio has the edge, but the Timberwolves are headed home with their backs against the wall. This feels like the classic “must-win” scenario. Look for Minnesota to lock in defensively and tie this series at 2-2, turning this into a best-of-three sprint to the finish.

The Verdict

Is the second round a “bust”? Compared to the chaos of the first round, maybe. But the NBA is a game of adjustments. While the Knicks look ready to punch their ticket to the ECF, the Cavs, Lakers, and Timberwolves are all returning to their home floors with everything to prove.

The hype might be hibernating, but with the Timberwolves poised to even things up, the drama is far from over.

Keep it REEL: Do you think we see any more Game 7s this round, or are the heavy hitters going to close the door early?
