Stop what you’re doing, hoops fans! The NCAA has officially announced that both the Men’s and Women’s Tournament fields are expanding to 76 teams starting next season (2027)!
As if the MADDEST MONTH OF THE YEAR wasn’t chaotic enough, we are getting even more high-stakes basketball. Here’s the breakdown of what this means for us:
- The New “First Four”: The play-in phase is growing significantly. We’re going from 4 games to 12 gamesinvolving 24 teams.+1
- The Main Bracket: Don’t worry—the classic 64-team field we love starting on Thursday/Friday remains intact. The 12 play-in winners will advance to join the primary bracket.+1
- More Opportunity: This is the first expansion since 2011. With more teams in Division I than ever before, this opens the door for those “Bubble” teams that always break our hearts on Selection Sunday.
- History in the Making: This is the largest jump in the field size since the tournament moved to 64 teams back in 1985.
I don’t know about you, but more games, more buzzer-beaters, and more “Cinderella” potential sounds like a win to me. My bracket is already sweating! 😅
What do you think? Is 76 the perfect number, or was 68 the sweet spot? Let’s talk hoops! 👇
