NBA Playoffs: Round 1 Was a Movie, Round 2 Is the Sequel

The first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs was a pure adrenaline shot to the system. We saw legendary collapses, historic comebacks, and a massive power shift in the East that essentially set the bracket on fire.

As we pivot to the Conference Semifinals, it’s time to take an honest look at the carnage, recap my predictions, and see how the Reel Sports Talk record is holding up against the chaos.

ROUND 1 RECAP: The Report Card

I finished the first round with a 6-2 series record. While I’ll take 75% accuracy any day, the two I missed weren’t just “losses”—they were absolute bracket busters that changed the entire complexion of the postseason.

The “On the Money” Picks

  • Knicks vs Hawks: I called Knicks in 6, and New York was the most clinical team of the round. They closed it out with an absolute 140-89 masterpiece in Game 6. Brunson and the Knicks didn’t just win; they sent a message to the rest of the East.
  • Thunder vs Suns: I had Thunder in 5, but OKC was even more ruthless. They completed a 4-0 sweep, proving that “young” doesn’t mean “inexperienced.” They look like a machine right now.
  • Spurs vs Trail Blazers: I predicted Spurs in 6; they got it done in 5. Victor Wembanyama’s defensive gravity in his playoff debut was even more terrifying than the regular season.
  • Lakers vs Rockets: I had Lakers in 7, but LeBron managed to shut the door in 6 games. This might be his most impressive carry job yet—the Lakers played the entire series without Luka and were missing Austin Reaves for the vast majority of the series. Closing out a hungry Rockets team while shorthanded is vintage King James.

The “Survived a Scare” Picks

  • Pistons vs Magic: My prediction was Pistons in 5. I nearly tore my hair out watching this go to 7 games. Detroit survived a massive scare, punctuated by a 116-94 Game 7 win yesterday to advance.
  • Cavs vs Raptors: I took Cavs in 5, but Toronto fought until the very last second of Game 7. Cleveland escaped by the skin of their teeth (114-102) to keep their season alive.

The Bracket Busters

  • Celtics vs 76ers: My biggest miss. I had Celtics in 4. I didn’t account for Jayson Tatum being sidelined for the deciding Game 7. Philly capitalized on the vacuum and sent the 2-seed packing in a shocking 109-100 upset.
  • Nuggets vs Timberwolves: I called Nuggets in 7. Minnesota had other plans, knocking out the defending champions in 6 games. The Jokić era in Denver took a massive hit this week as the Wolves’ size simply overwhelmed them.

FINAL TALLY: ROUND 1

  • Series Record: 6–2
  • Perfect Match Count: 1 (Knicks in 6)

ROUND 2 PREVIEW: Semifinal Predictions

Eastern Conference Semifinals

(1) Pistons vs (4) Cavs

This is a historic matchup—the first time two teams have ever met in the second round after both coming off a Game 7 win. Both squads are gassed. Detroit has the momentum, but Cleveland’s frontcourt depth is a nightmare.

  • The Prediction: CAVS IN 7. This is going to be a slugfest, but I think Cleveland has just enough left in the tank.

(3) Knicks vs (7) 76ers

Philly is playing with house money after slaying the Celtics, but Joel Embiid is clearly laboring. He didn’t look 100% at the end of their Game 7. Meanwhile, the Knicks are rested and looked like world-beaters against Atlanta.

  • The Prediction: KNICKS IN 5. The Garden is going to be too much for a hobbled Philly squad.

Western Conference Semifinals

(1) Thunder vs (4) Lakers

This is the heavyweight fight everyone wanted. The Thunder are coming off a sweep and have been resting, while LeBron has been grinding. If the Lakers can finally get Luka back, this becomes a Game 7 toss-up.

  • The Prediction: THUNDER IN 7. OKC’s youth and fresh legs will eventually outrun the Lakers, but never count out LeBron in a long series.

(2) Spurs vs (6) Timberwolves

Minnesota just killed the giant, which makes them the “giant killers” of 2026. However, the Spurs are a different beast. This is a battle of two defensive juggernauts.

  • The Prediction: TIMBERWOLVES IN 6. I’m betting on the Wolves’ veteran experience in this spot. They’ve been in these deep playoff waters before.

The road to the Finals continues tonight. Keep it REEL.
