Don’t Count Them Out: The Playoff Comeback Candidates

The NBA playoffs are where legends are made, but they’re also where the pressure is highest. Currently, two teams I have high expectations for are finding themselves in a hole. While the “defending champ” tag belongs to the Oklahoma City Thunder (who took it home in 2025), these two squads have the pedigree and the stars to flip their series around.

CURRENT SERIES STATUS

  • East: Orlando Magic up 2-1 over Detroit Pistons
  • West: Minnesota Timberwolves up 3-1 over Denver Nuggets

Eastern Conference: Detroit Pistons

The Pistons finished the season with 60 wins and the #1 seed, but the Orlando Magic are playing like they have nothing to lose.

  • Why they are down: Orlando’s shooting has been unconscious. In Game 3, the Magic shot 45% from three, while Detroit struggled at just 34%. Orlando is also living at the charity stripe, averaging a league-best 27.6 free throw attempts this season, which has kept Detroit’s defense on its heels.
  • What they need to do: It’s all about Cade Cunningham. The stats show a massive disparity: the Pistons are +7when Cade is on the floor and a staggering -11 when he sits. They need to manage his minutes perfectly and find a way to stop sending Orlando to the line.
  • Why I think they’ll win: Detroit didn’t win 60 games by accident. They have a top-two defense and the best player in the series. Once the Magic’s shooting regression hits—and it will—the Pistons’ depth and home-court advantage in a potential Game 5 and 7 will carry them through.

Western Conference: Denver Nuggets

Denver is staring at the brink of elimination, down 3-1 to a hungry Timberwolves team.

  • Why they are down: Minnesota’s defense has been a straitjacket, holding Denver under 100 points in three of the four games. Plus, the Nuggets are hurting; Aaron Gordon (calf) is clearly limited, and Peyton Watson is out. In Game 4, Denver allowed Ayo Dosunmu to go off for a career-high 43 points, proving they’re struggling to contain Minnesota’s secondary scorers.+2
  • What they need to do: Capitalize on the injuries. Minnesota is going into Game 5 without their entire starting backcourt—Anthony Edwards (knee) and Donte DiVincenzo (Achilles) are both out. Denver must dominate the paint and let Nikola Jokić (24 points, 15 rebounds, 9 assists in Game 4) orchestrate every single possession.
  • Why I think they’ll win: Coming back from 3-1 is the hardest task in hoops, but the door just swung open with Edwards being sidelined. If Denver takes Game 5 at home tonight, the pressure shifts entirely to a shorthanded Minnesota team. You never bet against Jokić in an elimination game at altitude.

Keep it REEL: Is Detroit just having a slow start, or is the 1-vs-8 upset actually happening? And can Denver pull off the miracle 3-1 comeback? Let’s hear your takes in the comments!
